Pro Bono Lawyers: Attorneys Free of Charge

Pro Bono Lawyers

The phrase “pro bono publico” is a Latin phrase which literally means “for the public good.” It is generally shortened as simply pro bono which is an adjective that refers to any professional services that are done without any monetary remunerations.

Although the term is applicable to different types of voluntary professional works, it is commonly used to refer to the practice of law. Hence, the term pro bono lawyer is commonly used when referring to a lawyer that offers free legal services to those who cannot afford high quality legal services. Pro bono lawyers are typically successful lawyers who are also members of cause-oriented groups such as human rights organizations.

They are idealists whose main purpose is making society better by advocating justice for all, especially the disenfranchised people. Most of these lawyers are activists that are pursuing idealistic goals through legal means. The causes they pursue may range from political to environmental.

Pro bono lawyers are different from public attorneys that are provided by the government. Public attorneys are employees who get paid for their work. They are obligated to defend clients not because they believe in a cause or they pursue idealistic goals. Public attorneys do public service simply because it is their job.

Although clients receive free services from public attorneys, the latter receive salary for doing their jobs. Hence, the wok is not really voluntary or pro bono. However, not all pro bono layers are necessary idealists or motivated by a cause. Some are required by law or by their organization.

For instance, a lawyer that might have been convicted of a misdemeanor or minor offense might be ordered by the court to render community service by providing free legal counsel. Some states also require practicing lawyers the minimum number of hours of free legal service per year.

In the United States, the American Bar Association recommends, under its ethical rules, that practicing lawyers must render at least fifty hours of pro bono services. Other bar associations may recommend fewer hours of pro bono services. The New York State Bar Association, for example, only requires twenty hours of pro bono services from its members.

Most new lawyers seek law firms that have high rankings based on several factors, namely, average billable hours, pro bono participation, and demographic diversity.

These rankings are annually published by independent but influential bar associations or law student organizations such as the Building a Better Legal Profession. In response to the market pressure of recruiting top graduates, law firms are now beefing up their pro bono services to increase their overall rankings.

Those law firms that fall short of the pro bono targets typically get lower overall rankings. Aside from the annual evaluations of law firms conducted by independent organizations, there are other ways of encouraging pro bono legal services.

It is notable that in the United Kingdom, the law schools and law firms have started celebrating the Pro Bono Week since 2002. The celebration is specifically intended to encourage pro bono services of lawyers and the general awareness of the social benefits of pro bono services.

Since the institutionalization of the celebration, there has been a steady increase in the number of lawyers offering pro bono services. In other countries, encouraging pro bono services is only limited to the pressure exerted by the respective bar associations.

I have finished my writ by myself. It’s a bit complicated as it has many different issues within it. But I do think my case is ripe, even rotten, for adjudication. I’m presently preparing a CD with all my documents and research. If you would like I can mail it to your office.

The office of Rosen, Bien & Galvan sent me their Prop 83 model. I have used the main body of it and added my other issues onto it as, I assume, was the intent of RB&G.

I would appreciate any advice that your firm can give me. I plan to move out of the country and start all over again in the country of Panama. My father is a naturalized US Citizen but was born in Panama. I can attain citizenship though him. But first I have to finish my parole which ends around Feb. 1, 2010. Then I have to move down there and establish residency then apply for citizenship. The declarations and certifications have already been done. I’ve shipped 3 big crates and my new life is just waiting for me to get there.

But I desperately need an attorney here to continue the work that I have started. If you cannot assist me directly I would appreciate any refferals you may have of attorneys that may be willing to take this case without retainer and with possibility of gaining from the civil suit that is attached to my writ.

So, I’m attaching the original writ. There are some minor errors I’ve discovered after submitting it though. Since I can only use my PC at my mother’s condo for 2 hours at a time it has taken me a very long time to prepare the writ. It took me nearly one week just to print it out.

I can e-mail you the exhibits little by little as attachments. Or, if you would like await the CD. I’m attaching just the writ and the table of contents, for now. Thank you for your help and perservearence in assisting people like me who have no other voice or means to fight for their rights.

I was wondering if it is a good idea to get some media coverage on this. I don’t really want to become the Poster-Boy for sex offender civil rights but I may have to in order to get more exposure. I know this sometimes helps or hurts a person. I feel I’ve been hurt as much as a person can by the “system” and I’m not affraid to be put back in prison. As I only have about 8 more months to go on my parole. It’s already been extended one full year. I’ve lost almost everything and will be going back to Panama with almost nothing but my life experience and my brains…. Hopefully that will be enough

Regards,

Marcel O. Gomez

What else do you want, if you will not except this I will go else where. Because I can’t afford a lawyer and I will not give up on my son. Some way I will not give up on fighting for him.

Contact your local bar association.

You can also try contacting the local Innocence Institute, if there is one. But they get innundated with requests and can only take on a handful of cases.
